Anyone who plays with a Shure stick mic - the 545, an SM-57 or SM-58 - knows what wonderful mics they are - great tone and range. Their biggest drawback for harp players, however, is the hand fatigue that comes from having to grip the relatively small diameter head with all that weight hanging out the back. Add an in-line volume control and the mic gets even longer, increasing the leverage that the weight of the cable has on your grip. Or, add a wireless transmitter and again long means uncomfortable. This is why Jason Ricci drove me to develop the SM57-JR, which integrates the volume control into the barrel of an SM-57. That product has been a great success and is a popular choice among harp players.
But with the launch of the SM57-JR, I began to get many questions along the following lines:
Can you build a volume control into a Shure 545 or SM-58 like you do with the SM-57JR?
Can you make me a high impedance SM-57 or SM-58?
Can you make it even shorter and lighter? PLEASE?
The answer to all of the above was an unfortunate "no".... until now.
I am very pleased to announce a new solution that turns all those no's into a resounding "Yes!" Just in time for Christmas, I might add...

considering it's the holiday season greg.......that aside the mic looks really sharp!
i just got a military e-v m43u mic for Christmas, but my bday is coming- we'll see what develops then!

Yep.
Huge freakin' amount of work. Start out with 4 foot long, solid round aluminum bar 1.25" in diameter. Cut it into 2.15" lengths. Face each end to exact length. Bore out the inside to proper depth and diameter. Cut a relief on inside diameter of lip. Thread the inside to match the Shure mics. Taper outside rear. Bore connector end to proper diameter for post-anodizing reaming. Chamfer all edges. Sand and polish with progressive grits from 120 to 600. Anodize. Drill pot hole. Ream end to precise diameter for perfect fit of connector. Machine connector to matching size. Drill and tap connector retention screw. Wire and install proper pot and transformer for the customer's choice. Assemble.
Repeat.

The mics look amazing and I agree with the old gasket man, child slave labor and inferior parts from China are cheaper. You have not only dealt with the weight and leverage problem but do it with style. To top it all off the volume control is positioned beautifully away from the hand making it less awkward than the bottom of a bullet. I have used the SM-58 for many years. I like it better than the bullet for bass and resposiveness but I get better tone from my bullet. Too bad you can't get both (yet). I remove the ball screen from the 58 though and then try to hold it with my pinky finger as far away from the harp as possible so I can make a chamber by cupping. It gives me much better tone and tons more grit.

Very tasty... But a bit expensive for me... Am I right pot is wired at hot wire just after mic head. How much Ohms?

Boris there are many possible ways to do the volume pot and I've spent a lot of time developing the circuit that I use. It gives smooth response, works well into a variety of impedances and doesn't rob tone. Sorry, its a "trade secret."
