gasket for bushman torp/nady shell?

i'm curious to hear from anyone who has swapped elements in the bushman torpedo mc, to say a ceramic or crystal element.  i recently got one for a decent deal, they were being blown out at bushman.  i got the cable with it, which is substandard.
i'd like to put an amphenol to 1/4 jack in it and maybe add a volume pot, plus get a good element in there for some ripping hi-z playing through my silvertone 1482 and my new replica '59 bassman (check out steve at sligo amps).  i think it was greg, on another forum, who recommended i set the element to split the distance where the element sits, to put the element halfway back on the vents on this shell.  i had considered just filling the vents in but apparently there are benefits to leaving them as is.

this shell has a couple of cool features, like the barrel where the xlr is housed, and the mount clip the mic comes with.  the clip screws onto a mic stand and the mic sits in the clip where it's easy to access whether you want to play through it on a stand or just have a place to set the mic when it's not in use.  it slips out easily.  the vents, i haven't really noticed a big difference in how the mic responds with hand effects.  the low-z element is fairly ok but i ask myself why mess with a p.a. channel when i've got amps with great tone?  turning this one into a great  hi-z mic looks fairly painless.

any experience with this mic, guys?

Hey, Jbone

If memory serves I used a typical 520 / CM gasket. You want something that holds the element and can be wedged back in there. Just be a little careful not to catch the fine mesh, which is barely glued to the shell and peels off easily. IN my case the fit was tight enough I didn't use any glue to hold the gasket in place - but if you're worried about it a drop or two of adhesive should be plenty. Be sure to find the element position you like first. DO try positioning the element mid-vents - its a gas.

For reference there are before and after pics of one I modified on my mods page:

about half way down the page.
