matching transformersanyone know where I can get a matching transformer to use with shure low Z CM elements?

You should read the early posts on 99E86. I have used a transformer
from JT-30 shop which works just fine with a low impedance element [/b]

thanks motown, I knew this was the place to get some info on this subject.
I'm now thinking about putting together a low Z mic to play through P A's, has anyone done this with maybe a JT-30 shell and a low or med Z cm ?
How did it sound? Sure would make it easy for sittin in on a tune or two, jam
nights, or lazy old men like myself.

Hi,
I sometimes use a shure 520 with a CM element wired for low impedance...I hooked it up with an XLR terminal on the cable...that way I can go straight into the desk and daisy chain in as many XLR to XLR cables as I please, because of the low impedance the cable length isn't such a factor.....great for the crowd walks....
It doesn't sound as good as playing it through an amp...the colouration isn't there...but its different and I like the change...
cheers,
Sandy M

Thanks Sandy, I'm going to give that a try. There are times when I could go sit in on 2 or 3 tunes and don't want to pack an amp, and I prefer the bullet style mics for the cup if nothing else. I used to play through 545's and EV's, but now it feels awkward to me.

You can get a lot of tone back if you go through a little tube preamp like the ART (see http://www.zzounds.com/item--ART127 - only $40) before you go into the PA. They usually come with 12AX7 and you can swap tubes - but they also have pre-and post-gain controls so you can control how much tube distortion you get. Still have to go through the PA's solid state front-end but it is much better than mic straight into the PA - and they're fairly small and cheap.

Good tip - thanks! I'm setting one of your shells up with a low-z element.
