Peavey Classic 50 (4x10) for harp?

Hi,

Anyone used the Peavey Classic 50 (4x10) for harp? Likes or dislikes? How about compared with the reissue Bassman?

you can do better for the money imho.  look at sligoamps.com for a great harp modded replica bassman- i know because i have one from steve clark!  very decent price for what he built me.  or look at harpgear amps.

just 2 ideas other than the classic 50, which i owned for a time and never really got what i wanted out of it.  if you could find a peavey delta blues 210 that would be a much better amp for harp.

How does it sound to you? As general rules point to point wiring is easier to fix and sounds better, but older amps will need fixing. The less preamp stages  the less hum and feedback. I think the mic is most important then speakers then tubes but start with whatever is painfully sucky. Preamp tubes are easiest. My point is unless you get a premodded package the amp is a drawing board for you to paint your style. Listen to other musicians sound ,ask questions(not if they're talking to females  Haha) and look for sound bytes on the web...ron sunshine usually has lots of harp mic samples and he plays the same damn runs thru the same amp so you can choose what direction you want to go. He has nice mics and has some of chuck gurneys, at fatbottom mics, work who has the best made to order service i know of (they also work with our host). If you go with the boutique guys everything should match up well but if you find your style needs say a el34(mid empasis) vs el84(more hz range) or you go fender speaker style vs cele vs weber vs emi ...your expesive investment may not even be compatible. Getta good mic use the pa go to jams buy guys a drink see if they'll let you use their amp while they drink, works on me lol.  have fun doing it  good luck, be patient and do it right unless your blanking rich , then you can post your goof for others to buy here at the for sale section.

I just don't have the chance to play the Classic 50 at gig volumes (with a full band). So, it's hard to tell by itself. I know it's loud as.

Also, where I live, it's hard for me to get a chance to A/B the Classic 50 with the Bassman.

So, I just need to depend on folks who have actually played the Classic 50 in a band situation, and hopefully, can compare that with the Bassman.

I definitely don't have the money to buy both and try them out.

I can/t remember the last peavey but bassman has a lot of history and advice for harp players. Play close attention to the speakers in reissues as the italian reissue jensens are not as popular as the vintage, my limited edition Blues jr had a p12r that sounded a little thin even with 3 years of playing. I replaced it with 1958 p12q to give it more reissue. That is some hardware and would give you equality with drummers and quitar in non miked situations.

let me put it like this:  when i had a classic 50, which i had a pro look over and make as harp friendly as he knew how to- and he was one of the guys who helped design and build the first sonny jr's-, i still never got the volume i needed for gigging with a not-so-loud electric band.  i was using a cm green bullet which could have added to the problem since it was so hot, but the solid state rectifier, which was hard wired into the amp, couldn't be changes.  i had a couple of 12a tubes swapped out and that was pretty much it.  at the time i couldn't afford to upgrade speakers either.  i ended up back with micing off a fender princeton tremolo for gigs.

i've had my replica bassman for nearly a year now.  built by steve clark of sligo amps, it is a dream come true for very reasonable $$.  check out big boy little, he uses one of the same amps albeit with reverb and master volume, 2 things i seem to be doing fine without.  the speaker combination along with the right power tubes and a couple of 12au7's, to me produces a great range of sound and tone choices for most any situation.  it handles a cm green bullet or a crystal powered bullet with a tweak of a couple knobs and i get the volume with great tone i had previously only wished for.   i haven't tried this amp for an acoustic gig yet but for any and all full band nights this past year it has served me better than ANY amp i've ever owned.
