Silvia Classics Harp Mic

Just wondering if anyone has heard of the Silvia Classics SC-21 "Dirty Bullet" Harmonica Microphone??
Cumberland

Ben,

Here's their website on that mic:    http://www.silviaclassics.com/sc21/

Here's Nady's Mic website:  http://www.nady.com/vhm7_mics_pg.html

They appear to be the same mic.  I have one, they make  pretty good vocal mics but not so great harp mics.   Here's  a pic of mine, it's not finished just yet but it won't be lone now.........

I'm in the process of converting mine with a little help from some friends, in fact, I just received a gasket from Tim the owner of this fine forum today........

I believe Greg a blowsmeaway.com posts here a lot and has had some personal / professional experience on this mic.......in fact, it was on Greg's website that that I saw on he converted and inspired me to do something similar......thanks for the inspiration Greg..........Love that shell.

Good luck........

Ha - thanks for the credit, Jeff

Here's a pic of the one I did:

You're right - these mics are bloody awful out of the box. inside is a low-Z basic vocal element with miles of airspace all around it - no gasket, nothing.

You can get a CM in there, and depending upon placement you can set it so the side vents allow passage of air from front to back of the element when uncupped - really accentuates cupping techniques.

Greg.......don't worry, I'm not goin' into the mic business......this is just my way of distracting myself from the daily fauder of my own "nightmare" I have created.    I needed a hobby and distraction (grey matter was developing upstairs) and this was a cheap ( or so I thought) distraction......I traded for the mic and thought I'd put a couple of bucks into it and get some down time in the process.........

Folks, this is my first (AND MY LAST) attempt at building a mic.......period.  If you ever entertain a similar idea, do yourself a BIG favor and go to Greg and get one made.......you'll be miles ahead.  What he does is WORTH every penny, I can't speak personally for him but he ain't gettin' rich I assure you.  Just think it over.........shell, element, gasket, adaptors, volume pots..........not to mention imposing on every friend you've got in the business with countless emails........you'll just end up singin' da blues........just call Greg and get a mic made.......then you'll be playin' the blues.........

Just for the record, I emailed Greg several months ago about having the mods don't to this mic.......I've already got more than that into it and it's still unfinished..........

Thanks again for the inspiration Greg, I'll let you know how it finally works out..........next year............ Laughing

Yep.  It ain't cheap.  But it is pretty fun!  I had a guy just send me an old RCA Aerodynamic in the mail.  I'm trying to figure out what to do with it, once I get a gasket molded for it.  Keep those old mics coming, folks!

It has been fun Tim (btw folks, Tim is one of the guy's I wore out with emails......).  I just had this discussion with someone on the phone yesterday.  I'm not sure how you guys make any money at all doin' it, I'm sure it's like most of us......it's a labor of love and we really don't do it for the money anyway.

A little off topic, Greg or Tim (or whoever), I had a crystal go bad for no apparent reason.  Didn't drop or bump it......always kept in padded climate controlled environment.......do they just go bad eventually......it's been driving me crazy.......guess I'll look for an R7 for it.  What's the goin' rate for an R7?  Ain't gonna swap it myself........Hello Greg.....Smile

With the crystal goin' bad, I'm reluctant to send my buscuit out to you (not you the damn USPS).  It's got such sweet tone that (it's quickly becoming my favorite) I don't want to risk damage during shipping.  It's one of the Repro shells but it's easy to cup and the tone........oh baby the tone......... You got the inline VC's in stock?

She's a pretty one.  Yeah, the crystals do just go bad after a while.  If you shake it, can you hear the salt rattling around?  I heard from a guy a week or so ago that has many elements on hand - 30 Black CRs, NOS 151s, and strong R7's.  Here's his site:  http://home.earthlink.net/%7Eetgallagher/

All the best,
Tim
