yet another bassman RI threadyeah,i know we've done this before.i'm looking for fresh insight to snork up my trusty old bassman.i just got a box of nos tubes and it included plenty of 12ay,12,au,12 blah blahs. i need this amp to sound good for both harp and guitar,that's the problem. do all three pre-tubes go to both channels? thank you! |

harp/guitar friendlyman i wish i could help with this. i know nothing about guitar friendly, though i do have a nice replica 59 bassman set up for harp.surely SOMEone has some ideas though..... |

Mr. Harpastatic, I have my bassman RI set up with 12ay7/12ay7/5751, it works really well for both that way, I actually prefer that for guitar over the 12ax7's, but I'm more of a T-bone Walker/ Eddie Taylor fan than a Stevie Ray/ Jimi kind a guy. Hope that helps, experiment with 12ax or 12at's in the driver section (V3), but for me 12ay7's in the first and second sockets are the best for harp and guitar. The problem, as you know, is that guitarists want high gain and harp players want low gain. That's the reason harp players throw out the AX tubes. I have never been able to reach a happy medium, personally. I've got a handmade Bassman and I love it. Sounds great for harp, but with no 'verb, it won't do me any good for guitar. Perhaps you could use an amp modeler between the guitar and amp so you could tweak in your desired sound. |

thanks tim.i went to a 12ay7 in one of the pre-amp spots,put different 12ax7(nos)in the other two, and put in a new rectifier tube.the amp sounds much better now.

I don't know how loud you play, but going low gain (AT, AY, AU) on all your preamp tubes will take care of the feedback, period. It's best to have enough tubes so you can mix and match until you get the sound you want.
But if you get the harp sound right, THEN work on the guitar sound, you might be able to get somewhere. That's why I was suggesting an amp modeler for the guitar. |
