i often run the mikes i use with no silk.i got it in my head years ago that would muffle the sound.i'm wondering if i was wrong,and what people use as silk other than......silk.also is there any cloth people have found to be too much muffle?

depends on what's used. True silk doesn't make any difference except to help keep dust out of the element. I've seen some people use paper, cardboard and acoustically-non-transparent foam - sometimes to tame an overly bright element - and these DO affect tone.
